VU University Amsterdam, Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), The Netherlands

IVM is a leading Dutch environmental research and academic teaching institute, nationally and internationally recognized for its high quality interdisciplinary research. IVM’s own research community consists of about 140 scientists and support staff from multiple disciplines such as analytical chemistry, toxicology, environmental economics, environmental policy analysis, law, management studies, spatial analysis and decision support. Members of three IVM departments contributes a combination of natural and social science expertise to CleanSea.

University of Exeter, United Kingdom

University of Exeter is a leading international research intensive University, with expertise in some of the most fundamental issues facing the world today, from functional materials to climate change. Scientists contributing to CleanSea are based in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, a rapidly expanding international centre supported by multimillion investment and competitive grant income.

EUCC Mediterranean Centre, Spain

EUCC Mediterranean Centre is a not-for-profit association supporting the Coastal and Marine Union (EUCC) mission, especially (but not exclusively) in the Mediterranean. This includes promoting coastal and marine management, integrating biodiversity conservation, the integrity of landscapes, cultural heritage and the social fabric of our coast. The Med Centre plays a major role in the field of communication and stakeholder’s involvement in a wide range of pan-European projects and encouraging a cross-disciplinary approach to investigating and resolving coastal issues.

Deltares, The Netherlands

Deltares is a Dutch national institute for applied geophysical, ecological and policy-related research and development applied to delta areas (marine, coastal, estuarine, and riverine). The primary aim of Deltares is bringing together science and application by translating scientific knowledge into innovative solutions. Deltares has a broad expertise in fields like hydrodynamics, hydro-ecological modelling, water quality, microbiology and aquatic eco(toxico)logy, and is involved in (integrated) research studies and projects in many marine water systems in relation to e.g. EU legislation (a.o. MSFD, WFD, North Sea Ministerial Conferences, OSPAR, and ICES).

KIMO Nederland and Belgium

KIMO (Kommunenes Internasjonale Miljøorganisasjon) is an international network of more than 160 coastal municipalities in 16 North-west European countries around the Northern Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic and Irish Seas. The municipalities cooperate for clean and healthy seas. KIMO members are democratically chosen representatives who try to achieve their goals by parliamentarian procedures. Its policy aims are to raise political awareness on local, regional and European levels for the prevention of further pollution of the seas and coasts e.g. by marine litter and to develop sustainability programs.

Own Capital Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (EV ILVO), Belgium

The Own Capital of the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (EV ILVO) was established by a Decree of the Flemish Government of 23 December 2005 (Belgian Official Journal of 30 December 2005). It is a scientific institute that performs research in the areas of agriculture, horticulture and fisheries on a project basis. EV ILVO’s fisheries research encompasses the fields of fishery biology, aquaculture and restocking, the technical aspects of fishing and the quality of the marine habitat and its natural resources.

Örebro University, MTM Research Center, Sweden

The MTM Research Center at Örebro University is part of the Institute of Natural Sciences which currently consists of around 100 scientists. MTM is identified as one of the strong research environments by the University. MTM has numerous national and international collaborations and the laboratory is often used as a QA/QC laboratory at a European and international level.

University of the Aegean, Greece

The University of the Aegean - Department of Marine Science is an interdisciplinary teaching and research unit within the Faculty of Environmental Science, University of the Aegean. The research philosophy adopted is a multidisciplinary holistic approach trying to integrate natural and socio-economic perspectives. Coastal field research is carried out using the Departments’ coastal research vessel, R/VAmphitrite.

Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), Norway

NILU is an independent research foundation and conducts environmental research with emphasize on the source of pollution, atmospheric transport and transformation, deposition and other removal processes, effects of pollutions on ecosystems, materials and health and cost-benefit analysis of environmental strategy. NILU has several national roles related to aspects of environmental pollution, and conducts approximately 250 projects every year for government, industry and national and international organizations.

KC-Denmark A/S

KC-Denmark A/S was established in 1975 and is a private company since 2006. It is specialized in the development of various types of sampling equipment for oceanographic, environmental and pollution investigations. KC-Denmark A/S is a global supplier of equipment to universities, research institutes, municipal authorities and consulting engineers. It is also involved in design, development, co-development, manufacturing and testing of submarine instrumentation and equipment such as deep sea research equipment, a range of box corers, grabs, plankton nets of all sizes, plankton pumps, CDT-winches, hemispheric flow force indicators, biological sampling equipment and water sampling stations.

Role in project
Contributor to WP3 (tool development), in particular to the development and improvement of the micro-plastic sampling strategy by adaptation of plankton pumps and other equipment.

Ecologic brings fresh ideas to environmental policies, with a focus on obtaining practical results. It covers the entire spectrum of environmental issues, including the integration of environmental concerns into other policy fields. Ecologic has a strong record of linking science and policy, and is experienced in mediating and accompanying stakeholder dialogues.

Investments in Sustainable Innovations, The Netherlands

Investments in Sustainable Innovations (ISI) is an SME that pioneers social/green innovative solutions in the environmental field. Building on 15 years of experience in sustainabilityrelated projects in different companies, Yvon Wolthuis (ISI owner) consolidates multidisciplinary knowledge towards sustainable and economically viable solutions in the field of ecological damage-control. ISI is highly active in the field of marine litter, and continues to work on litter projects commissioned by the Dutch government and in cooperation with other agencies and organizations.

The National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” (NIMRD), subunit of the National Institute for Research and Development for Environmental Protection is the leading marine research institution in Romania, as well as national coordinator and focal point with respect to international research tasks and responsibilities in the field of marine science.

Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Greece

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is the main organization for Oceanographic, Inland Waters, Marine Biology, Genetics, Fisheries and Aquaculture research in Greece. It constitutes of three relevant Institutes. In the proposed research there will be collaboration between the Institute of Oceanography (IO), which will act as the main partner of the project.
